Wat ik nu toch ontdekte: Galici\u00eb heeft zijn eigen lettertype!  Het type letters herken je misschien wel. Je ziet ze regelmatig in Galici\u00eb. Typisch Galicisch, dacht ik dan ook meteen toen ik het lettertype zag. Ik kwam het lettertype bij toeval tegen tijdens het onderzoek voor mijn artikel over de Galicische taal<\/a>. En nog meer toeval, de ontwerper bleek een oude bekende van me te zijn.

Het Galicische lettertype ziet er als volgt uit en het heet Uralita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ik sprak de designer Rub\u00e9n Prol <\/a>over het lettertype. Zijn lettertype wordt regelmatig gebruikt in Galici\u00eb, met name voor promotionele uitingen, zoals posters en folders, maar ook voor lichtreclame van caf\u00e9s en winkels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rub\u00e9n vertelt me dat het lettertype gebaseerd is op oude Romaanse schrijfwijzes, zoals je wel eens tegenkomt in kerken in Europa. Begin vorige eeuw is dit type schrift in Galici\u00eb populair geworden. Aanstichter hiervan was Alfonso Castelao, een tekenaar en tevens politiek figuur, hij was een van de stichters van de Galicische Nationalistische partij.

Het lijkt op het eerste gezicht vreemd, Casteloa zowel als tekenaar \u00e9n politiek figuur. Toch blijkt het niet zo vreemd te zijn dat karakteristieke letters gebruikt worden in lokale uitingen. Onderzoek van de Zweedse wetenschapper Johan Jarlehed van de Universiteit van G\u00f6teborg<\/a> toont aan dat in Galici\u00eb (en Baskenland) vaak een kenmerkende lettertype gebruikt wordt in uitingen die verband hebben met de lokale cultuur. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn politieke propaganda, lokale gelegenheden als caf\u00e9s en lokale publieke instellingen. Ook wordt het kenmerkende letterschrift veel gebruikt in commercieel uitingen waarbij men lokale authenticiteit wil uitstralen, zie de voorbeelden hieronder van onder andere Estrella Galicia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bij het zien van het lettertype Uralita dacht ik meteen aan Galici\u00eb. Het oude Romaans en Keltische gevoel kom je vaker tegen in Galici\u00eb. Hier een paar voorbeelden daarvan. Zoals in de vorige alinea al naar voren kwam, hebben al deze uitingen te maken met het benadrukken van de lokale, Galicische cultuur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
